Crete 15: Palaikastro

 
Where the kouros was found.
Palaikastro was a Minoan era town, violently destroyed. The most interesting thing archaeologists found among the ruins was a "kouros" or statue of a boy.  Nothing else like it has ever been discovered but the quality is such that scientists assume it was not a "first try."

The location and condition of the statue suggests that someone grabbed it by the legs and smashed it against a wall.  Who? Why? Another mystery.

The kouros now resides in the Siteia Museum.  Pictures of it can be found below.  And here is a video about it.
