Crete 1: The Trip

Zakros

In April 2023 we took a trip to Crete, our second tour of Greece.  I'm putting up some pictures here, mostly for me, but you are welcome to look as well.

Crete is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and the largest island in Greece.

Why is it important archaeologically? Well, think about this.

Homer wrote the Odyssey and Iliad about 800 B.C.E.  He was describing the Mycenean civilization, which flourished around 1400 B.C.E.  The Myceneans apparently defeated the Minoan civilization which flourished on Crete for a thousand years.

So when you are looking at Cretan ruins some of them were ancient when the Trojan War was the daily news.
