Crete 10: Rethymno



 

 

Rethymno is a city of 30,000 on the north-central coast of Crete. Of all the places we visited on the island this one felt most like the seashore resort towns of New Jersey.  Admittedly Asbury Park has fewer medieval ruins.



 

 

One of the biggest attractions in Rethymno is the Fortezza, a fortress built by the Venetians in the 16th Century.

We were told this was the only bakery in Crete that still makes filo dough the old-fashioned way.  It's a remarkable process.  You can see a video I made of it: Part 1 and Part 2 and Part 3.
