Greece 24: Reflections
On the last day of our tour of the Peloponnese our group dined at a fancier restaurant than on most nights. This is the view out the window, with our table reflected.
We originally planned to take this trip in the spring of 2020 but a plague interfered. We were, of course, torn with anxiety about making the journey in October 2021. But we decided it was a reasonable risk, and it was. We managed to slip in during the golden period between vaccination and omicron. Al the people on the tour were vaccinated and, as far as I know, stayed healthy.
If I was left with one overwhelming impression it was how much of what we think of as Western civilization has its roots in Greece. Roman and Byzantine culture borrowed from the classical Greeks as much as anyone.
I hope someday to return to Athens, Mycenae, and Monemvasia. I hope some of you will have a chance to get there as well.
