Greece 8: Pylos
According to Homer at the time of the Trojan War the city/state of Pylos in Messenia was ruled by wise old King Nestor.
The building at Ano Englianos is a large building of the Mycenean era (i.e. Trojan War times) and is often referred to as Nestor's Palace. We don't know that it was a royal residence, or that anyone lived there at all. It may have been more of a place for public meetings, where the ruler met with foreign dignitaries or governing bodies met.
It stands today under a permanent tent and excavations continue. The circle you see in the ground is the remains of a hearth, big enough for a good number of people to gather around a fire.
